History

Haverford College was founded in 1833 in Haverford, Pennsylvania, by members of the Orthodox Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends to provide a Quaker-centered education for young men. Initially established as a men’s institution, Haverford College opened enrollment to non-Quakers in 1849 as it evolved into a broader liberal arts college. In 1897, students and faculty adopted the Honor Code, which became central to campus governance and academic life. The college began admitting women as transfer students in 1969 and became fully coeducational in 1980. Throughout the twentieth century, Haverford College expanded its academic programs and strengthened partnerships with Bryn Mawr College, Swarthmore College, and the University of Pennsylvania. Today, Haverford College remains an undergraduate-focused liberal arts institution known for its historic campus and collaborative academic environment.
