History

Haven University was founded in 1969 in California as the California Graduate School of Theology under the leadership of William S. McBirnie, an ordained Southern Baptist pastor and educator. Established to provide accessible, interdenominational theological education, the institution initially operated in Glendale before relocating to Garden Grove. During its early years, Haven University focused on graduate-level theological training designed to accommodate working pastors and church leaders. Over time, the school expanded its academic offerings to include undergraduate programs and degrees in business administration alongside its theology curriculum. The institution later moved to facilities in Garden Grove and developed additional instructional sites in California and Nevada. In 2020, the undergraduate division adopted the name Haven University, while the graduate theology programs retained the California Graduate School of Theology identity. Today, Haven University continues its mission as a Christian institution offering accredited degree programs centered on faith-based education and leadership development.
