History

Harvey Mudd College was founded in 1955 in Claremont, California, as part of the Claremont Colleges. Chartered in December 1955 and named for mining engineer Harvey Seeley Mudd, the college was created to provide a strong education in science and engineering combined with the humanities. Harvey Mudd College opened its doors to students in 1957, during the early years of the Space Race, when national attention was focused on technological education. Under founding president Joseph Platt, the college established a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum. In 1963, Harvey Mudd College launched its Clinic Program, partnering student teams with industry and government sponsors. Over time, the campus expanded with new academic buildings and research facilities. In the twenty-first century, Harvey Mudd College continued to grow its research programs, promote diversity in STEM fields, and strengthen its role within the Claremont consortium.
