History

Grambling State University was founded in 1901 in Grambling, Louisiana, as the Colored Industrial and Agricultural School. Established to provide educational opportunities for African American students in north Louisiana, the institution was led by its founding president, Charles P. Adams. In its early years, the school focused on industrial education and teacher training. It later became the North Louisiana Agricultural and Industrial School and continued expanding its academic offerings. In 1946, the institution was renamed Grambling College, reflecting broader curricular growth. The addition of graduate programs in 1974 led to its current name, Grambling State University. Over the decades, Grambling State University has developed into a comprehensive public university within the University of Louisiana System, expanding programs in business, education, nursing, engineering, and cybersecurity while maintaining its historic mission as a historically Black university.
