History

Golden Gate University was founded in 1901 in San Francisco, California, emerging from the educational programs of the San Francisco YMCA. Although its roots trace to earlier YMCA lecture series and night classes, the university recognizes 1901 as its official founding year, when a law school was established and degree-granting programs formally began. Early offerings focused on law, accounting, and business education for working adults. In 1923, the institution was incorporated as Golden Gate College and gained authority to confer degrees independently. It adopted the name Golden Gate University in 1972 after expanding its academic scope and achieving university status. Over the decades, Golden Gate University developed graduate programs in taxation, business, and public administration, and relocated to its current Mission Street campus in the Financial District. Today, Golden Gate University continues its emphasis on professional education and flexible learning formats.
