History

Georgia College & State University was founded in 1889 as Georgia Normal and Industrial College in Milledgeville, Georgia, following legislation sponsored to create a state-supported college for women. The institution opened in 1891 with a mission to prepare women for teaching and industrial careers, and Joseph Harris Chappell served as its first president. In 1917, the college was authorized to grant four-year degrees, with the first degrees awarded in 1921. It was renamed Georgia State College for Women in 1922 and became part of the University System of Georgia in 1932. After World War II, enrollment patterns shifted, and the institution became coeducational in 1967, adopting the name Georgia College at Milledgeville and later Georgia College. In 1996, it was designated Georgia’s public liberal arts university and officially renamed Georgia College & State University, reflecting its expanded academic mission.
