History

Full Sail University was founded in 1979 in Dayton, Ohio, by Jon Phelps as a recording arts school focused on audio engineering and studio production. In 1980, the institution relocated to Florida, eventually settling in Winter Park in 1989. During its early years, Full Sail University concentrated on training students for careers in the recording industry, but it expanded in the 1990s to include programs in film, computer animation, digital media, and game design. The school began offering bachelor’s degrees in 2005 and launched online degree programs in 2007. In 2008, it was granted university status by the Florida Department of Education and adopted the name Full Sail University. Over time, the university developed specialized production facilities and broadened its academic offerings to reflect changes in media, entertainment, and emerging technologies.
