History

Elon University was founded in 1889 in Elon, North Carolina, when the North Carolina legislature granted a charter to Elon College. Established by the Christian Connection, later part of the United Church of Christ, the institution opened with 76 students under its first president, William S. Long. In 1923, a major fire destroyed much of the campus, prompting immediate rebuilding and shaping the core of the historic campus. Throughout the twentieth century, Elon College expanded its academic programs and facilities while drawing increasing numbers of students from outside North Carolina. In 2001, Elon College officially became Elon University, reflecting its expanded graduate offerings and broader academic scope. The establishment of the School of Law in 2006 and continued development of professional schools further strengthened Elon University’s national profile and institutional growth.
