Elmhurst University

Elmhurst University is a private university located in Elmhurst, Illinois, a suburban community about 30 minutes west of Chicago. Elmhurst University was founded in 1871 in Elmhurst, Illinois, by the German Evangelical Synod of the Northwest as the Elmhurst Proseminary, established to prepare young men for theological study and to train teachers for parochial schools. Instruction was initially conducted in German, and the early curriculum included classical languages, music, and the sciences. In 1919, the institution became Elmhurst Academy and Junior College, reflecting an expanded academic mission. In 1924, it formally adopted the name Elmhurst College and began granting four-year bachelor’s degrees, with theologian H. Richard Niebuhr serving as the first president of the newly organized college. Over the twentieth century, Elmhurst College broadened its academic offerings and student body. In 2020, the institution became Elmhurst University, marking its growth into a comprehensive university with undergraduate and graduate programs.
