Eastern Illinois University was founded in 1895 after the Illinois State Legislature established the Eastern Illinois State Normal School in Charleston to train teachers for east-central Illinois. In 1921, the institution became Eastern Illinois State Teachers College, reflecting its expanding curriculum and authority to grant four-year degrees. It was renamed Eastern Illinois State College in 1947 as programs broadened beyond teacher education. In 1957, the Illinois General Assembly granted university status, creating Eastern Illinois University.
