In 1921, the institution became Eastern Illinois State Teachers College, reflecting its expanding curriculum and authority to grant four-year degrees. It was renamed Eastern Illinois State College in 1947 as programs broadened beyond teacher education. In 1957, the Illinois General Assembly granted university status, creating Eastern Illinois University. Over the decades, the university expanded its academic colleges, graduate offerings, and campus facilities.
