History

Eastern Connecticut State University was founded in 1889 as the Willimantic State Normal School in Willimantic, Connecticut, to train public school teachers. The institution expanded in the early 20th century, adding campus buildings and transitioning to a four-year curriculum in 1937, when it became Willimantic State Teachers College and George H. Shafer was installed as its first president. After World War II, academic offerings broadened, and the school introduced graduate programs in 1953. Reflecting its expanding mission beyond teacher education, the institution was renamed Eastern Connecticut State College in 1967. In 1983, Eastern Connecticut State University achieved university status, marking a significant step in its development. Since then, Eastern Connecticut State University has grown as a public liberal arts institution within the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system, continuing to evolve its academic programs and campus facilities.
