History

East-West University was founded in 1980 in Chicago, Illinois, to expand access to affordable higher education in an urban setting. Planning for the institution began in 1978, and it was incorporated as a nonprofit corporation in 1979 before receiving approval from the Illinois Board of Higher Education in 1980. East-West University welcomed its first class on September 15, 1980. During the early 1980s, the university secured federal recognition and became accredited by the Higher Learning Commission in 1983. Over time, East-West University developed programs in business, behavioral sciences, computer science, and liberal arts, serving a diverse student body in downtown Chicago.
