History

East Texas A&M University was founded in 1889 as East Texas Normal College in Cooper, Texas, by educator William Leonidas Mayo, who served as its first president. The institution moved to Commerce, Texas, in 1894 and became a key center for teacher training in the region. In 1917, it was acquired by the State of Texas and renamed East Texas State Normal College, later expanding its curriculum beyond teacher education. The school became East Texas State Teachers College in 1923 and East Texas State College in 1957 as academic programs broadened. In 1965, it was renamed East Texas State University following the introduction of doctoral programs. The university joined the Texas A&M University System in 1996 as Texas A&M University–Commerce. In 2023, it adopted the name East Texas A&M University, reflecting its regional identity and system affiliation.
