History

East Tennessee State University was founded in 1911 in Johnson City, Tennessee, as East Tennessee State Normal School to train teachers for the region. In 1925, it became East Tennessee State Teachers College as it expanded its academic offerings and gained accreditation. By 1943, the institution was renamed East Tennessee State College, reflecting the addition of broader liberal arts programs. In 1963, it officially became East Tennessee State University, marking its transition to a comprehensive university. Over time, East Tennessee State University developed graduate and professional programs, including the Quillen College of Medicine and later the Gatton College of Pharmacy, which received full accreditation in 2010.
