Dordt University

Dordt University is a private evangelical Christian university located in Sioux Center, Iowa. Founded in 1955 and affiliated with the Christian Reformed Church in North America, the university offers associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degree programs across a range of disciplines, including education, engineering, business, nursing, agriculture, and the liberal arts. Dordt University integrates a Reformed Christian perspective into its academic programs and campus life. Dordt University was founded in 1955 in Sioux Center, Iowa, as Midwest Christian Junior College. The institution emerged from efforts by members of local Christian Reformed congregations in Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota who sought to establish a Reformed Christian college in the region. Classes began in the fall of 1955 with about 40 students. In 1956, the school was renamed Dordt College, honoring the Synod of Dordt of 1618–1619. The first graduating class completed its program in 1957, and Dordt awarded its first four-year Bachelor of Arts degrees in 1965. Under the leadership of its first president, Rev. B.J. Haan, Dordt University expanded its academic offerings and campus facilities. In May 2019, Dordt College officially became Dordt University, reflecting growth in graduate programs and institutional development while maintaining its Christian Reformed identity.
