History

Denison University was founded in 1831 in Granville, Ohio, by the Ohio Baptist Education Society as the Granville Literary and Theological Institution. The school became Granville College in 1845 and was renamed Denison University in 1854 to honor early benefactor William S. Denison. In its early decades, the institution emphasized classical and theological education. Graduate instruction began in 1887, but by the 1920s Denison University shifted to a focus on undergraduate education. In 1927, the university merged with Shepardson College, formally expanding coeducation. Throughout the twentieth century, Denison University developed its liberal arts curriculum and expanded campus facilities. In 1995, it joined the Five Colleges of Ohio consortium to strengthen academic collaboration. Today, Denison University continues as a residential liberal arts institution with a national student body and a broad range of academic programs.
