History

Davidson College was founded in 1837 by the Concord Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church and named for Revolutionary War general William Lee Davidson. Located in Davidson, North Carolina, the college began as a manual labor institute intended to combine classical education with physical work. Robert Hall Morrison served as its first president. During the Civil War, enrollment declined and campus resources were strained, but the institution remained open. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Davidson College expanded its curriculum and campus facilities. The college admitted women to degree programs in 1972, marking a significant transition to coeducation.
