CUNY Brooklyn College

CUNY Brooklyn College is a public university located in the Midwood and Flatbush neighborhoods of Brooklyn, New York. Founded in 1930, it is a senior college within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. The college offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs across the liberal arts, sciences, business, education, and the visual and performing arts. Brooklyn College serves a diverse student population drawn largely from New York City and the surrounding region. CUNY Brooklyn College was founded in 1930 as New York City’s first public coeducational liberal arts college. It was created through the merger of the Brooklyn branches of Hunter College, then a women’s college, and the City College of New York, then a men’s college. William A. Boylan served as the first president and guided the institution during its early development in downtown Brooklyn. In 1937, the college moved to its current Midwood campus. During the mid-20th century, CUNY Brooklyn College expanded its academic programs and faculty, becoming known for strong humanities and science offerings. The fiscal crisis of the 1970s led to the end of free tuition across CUNY and institutional restructuring. Over subsequent decades, CUNY Brooklyn College introduced core curriculum reforms and expanded graduate education, evolving into a comprehensive senior college within the CUNY system.
