History

Concordia University-Irvine was founded in 1976 as Christ College Irvine to serve the Pacific Southwest region of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod. Established to prepare pastors, church workers, and Christian educators, the institution opened under the leadership of its founding president, Rev. Dr. Charles Manske. In its early years, Christ College Irvine focused on liberal arts and theological education within a residential Christian setting in Irvine, California. In 1993, the Board of Regents voted to change the name to Concordia University-Irvine, aligning the institution with the national Concordia University System. Over time, Concordia University-Irvine expanded its academic offerings to include professional and graduate programs, including doctoral education beginning in 2014. Today, Concordia University-Irvine continues to operate as a private Lutheran university, combining liberal arts foundations with career-oriented and faith-based academic programs.
