History

Colorado State University Pueblo was founded in 1933 as Southern Colorado Junior College, opening with 63 students and two faculty members in Pueblo, Colorado. The institution initially provided two years of college instruction and vocational training to meet regional educational needs. In 1937, the creation of the Pueblo County Junior College District brought public funding and the name Pueblo Junior College. As academic offerings expanded, the college became Southern Colorado State College in 1961 and achieved four-year status in 1975 as the University of Southern Colorado. In 2003, state legislation renamed the institution Colorado State University Pueblo and aligned it more closely with the Colorado State University System. Over the decades, Colorado State University Pueblo has developed into a regional comprehensive university offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees while continuing its original mission of serving southern Colorado.
