History

Colgate University was founded in 1819 when the New York State Assembly granted a charter to the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York in Hamilton, New York. The institution opened in 1820 and was later renamed the Hamilton Literary and Theological Institution in 1823. In 1846, its collegiate department received a separate charter, and the school became known as Madison University. Reflecting the long support of the Colgate family, the institution adopted the name Colgate University in 1890. Colgate University expanded its curriculum beyond theological study during the nineteenth century and developed into a liberal arts college. The university became fully coeducational in 1970. Over time, Colgate University broadened its academic offerings, strengthened its residential campus, and established national study programs, shaping its identity as a selective liberal arts institution in central New York.
