History

Clayton State University was founded in 1969 in Morrow, Georgia, originally opening as Clayton Junior College to serve the growing south metropolitan Atlanta region. Authorized by the University System of Georgia in the mid-1960s, the college enrolled its first class of 942 students in September 1969. In 1986, the institution was elevated to four-year status and renamed Clayton State College, expanding its academic offerings to include bachelor’s degrees. Continued growth led to another name change in 1996 to Clayton College & State University, reflecting its broadened mission. In 2005, the institution adopted its current name, Clayton State University. Over time, Clayton State University added graduate programs, expanded campus facilities, and developed additional instructional sites in nearby counties, evolving into a comprehensive public university serving the greater Atlanta area.
