History

Charles R Drew University of Medicine and Science was founded in 1966 in Los Angeles, California, following the 1965 Watts uprising and the McCone Commission’s call for expanded medical services in South Los Angeles. Originally incorporated as the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School, the institution was created to train physicians and health professionals to serve underserved communities. In 1978, the Drew–UCLA Medical Education Program was established in partnership with the University of California, Los Angeles, allowing medical students to complete clinical training in the area. During the 1980s, the institution expanded its academic offerings and adopted the name Charles R Drew University of Medicine and Science to reflect its broader mission. Over the decades, it added programs in nursing, public health, and biomedical sciences. In 2023, Charles R Drew University of Medicine and Science enrolled the inaugural class of its independently operated four-year MD program, marking a significant milestone in its evolution.
