History

Chaminade University of Honolulu was founded in 1955 by five Marianists as St. Louis Junior College, created to provide Catholic higher education in Honolulu, Hawaii. The first class enrolled 30 students. In 1957, the institution became a four-year, coeducational college and adopted the name Chaminade College, honoring Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, founder of the Society of Mary. In 1967, evening programs were introduced to serve working adults and military personnel. The addition of graduate programs in 1977 marked its transition to Chaminade University of Honolulu. Over the decades, the university expanded academic offerings in areas such as nursing, education, business, and the sciences, while developing campus facilities in Kaimuki. Rooted in Marianist educational values, Chaminade University of Honolulu continues to evolve as a Catholic university serving Hawaii’s diverse communities.
