Carleton College

Carleton College is a private liberal arts college located in Northfield, Minnesota. Founded in 1866, the college offers undergraduate programs in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences within a residential campus setting. Carleton College was founded in 1866 in Northfield, Minnesota, by the Minnesota Conference of Congregational Churches under the original name Northfield College. The institution opened to students in 1867, and in 1871 it was renamed Carleton College after William Carleton, whose financial gift helped secure its future. James Strong became the first president in 1870 and led the college through its early expansion. The first graduating class completed studies in 1874. Over the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Carleton College developed its liberal arts curriculum and expanded its campus facilities. The college adopted a coeducational model early in its history and gradually strengthened its academic departments. During the twentieth century, Carleton College grew in enrollment, constructed new academic buildings, and established the Cowling Arboretum. Today, Carleton College remains a residential undergraduate institution focused on liberal arts education in Minnesota.
