History

California State University-San Marcos was founded in 1989 as the 20th campus of the California State University system. Efforts to establish a public university in North San Diego County date back to the 1960s, and a satellite campus of San Diego State University operated in the area beginning in 1978. In 1989, state legislation formally created California State University-San Marcos as an independent institution, and Bill W. Stacy was appointed its first president. The university admitted its first cohort of students in the early 1990s on a newly acquired hillside campus in the city of San Marcos. Over time, California State University-San Marcos expanded its academic colleges, added graduate and professional programs, and developed facilities such as a central library and student services buildings. The university has continued to grow in enrollment and academic offerings, becoming a comprehensive public institution serving the greater San Diego region.
