California State University-Sacramento, commonly known as Sacramento State or Sac State, is a public university in Sacramento, California. Founded in 1947, it is part of the 23-campus California State University system. California State University-Sacramento was founded in 1947 as Sacramento State College during a period of expanding access to higher education following World War II. The institution began offering classes on September 22, 1947, initially sharing facilities with Sacramento Junior College. Guy West was appointed as the first president and guided the college through its formative years. In 1948, a permanent campus site was selected along the American River in Sacramento, establishing the foundation for future growth. Over the following decades, enrollment increased and academic programs expanded. In 1972, Sacramento State College was granted university status and renamed California State University, Sacramento. The university later introduced graduate and professional degrees, including doctoral programs beginning in the late 1990s and 2000s. Today, California State University-Sacramento continues to serve as a comprehensive public university within the California State University system.
