California State University-Los Angeles

California State University-Los Angeles is a public university located in Los Angeles, California, and part of the California State University system. Situated in the eastern part of the city near Alhambra, it serves a diverse urban student population. The university offers undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs across colleges including business, engineering, natural and social sciences, education, and health and human services. California State University-Los Angeles was founded in 1947 by an act of the California Legislature and opened as Los Angeles State College on the campus of Los Angeles City College. Established to serve returning World War II veterans and the growing population of Southern California, the institution initially offered upper-division and teacher training programs. In 1949, the college began expanding its academic offerings and enrollment grew rapidly. During the 1950s and early 1960s, the campus developed permanent facilities at its present location in the eastern part of Los Angeles. In 1964, the institution was renamed California State College at Los Angeles, and in 1972 it became California State University-Los Angeles as part of systemwide changes within the California State University system. Over the decades, California State University-Los Angeles has expanded its graduate and professional programs and strengthened its role as a comprehensive urban public university.
