California State University-Chico

California State University-Chico is a public university located in Chico, California, and part of the 23-campus California State University system. Established in the late nineteenth century as a teacher-training institution, it has grown into a comprehensive university offering undergraduate and graduate programs across colleges of agriculture, business, engineering, humanities, natural sciences, education, and behavioral and social sciences. The campus includes a main residential campus as well as a university farm and ecological reserves that support hands-on learning and research. Students are often drawn to California State University-Chico for its midsize campus environment, strong regional ties in Northern California, and programs that emphasize applied learning and community engagement.

California State University-Chico was founded in 1887 after the California Legislature created the Northern Branch State Normal School to train public school teachers. Located in Chico, California, the campus opened in 1889 on land donated by John Bidwell, and its first class graduated in 1891. Edward Timothy Pierce served as the first principal, establishing the early curriculum and standards. In 1921, the institution became Chico State Teachers College and began granting bachelor’s degrees in 1924. It was renamed Chico State College in 1935 as its academic offerings expanded beyond teacher education. In 1972, the campus formally adopted the name California State University-Chico upon integration into the modern California State University system. Over time, the university developed additional academic colleges, research facilities, a university farm, and ecological reserves, shaping its role as a comprehensive public university in Northern California.
