History

California State Polytechnic University-Humboldt was founded in 1913 as Humboldt State Normal School after Governor Hiram Johnson signed legislation to establish a teacher-training institution in Arcata, California. The school opened in 1914 with a small cohort of students preparing for careers in public education. Under its first president, Nelson Blieau Van Matre, the institution focused on meeting the region’s need for qualified teachers. Over the following decades, it expanded its curriculum and facilities, becoming Humboldt State Teachers College and later Humboldt State College. In 1974, it was renamed Humboldt State University as part of broader changes within the California State University system. On January 26, 2022, the campus officially became California State Polytechnic University-Humboldt, reflecting a new polytechnic mission supported by significant state investment and expanded applied, career-focused programs.
