California Lutheran University

California Lutheran University is a private university in Thousand Oaks, California, founded in 1959 and affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Located about 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles, it offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs across liberal arts, sciences, business, education, and theology. The university operates on a suburban campus and also maintains additional locations for select programs. Originally established as California Lutheran College, it became California Lutheran University in 1986 to reflect its expanded academic offerings. It is recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution and emphasizes small class sizes and community engagement. California Lutheran University was founded in 1959 as California Lutheran College in Thousand Oaks, California, following efforts by leaders of the Evangelical Lutheran Church to establish a four-year Lutheran college in the state. The institution opened its doors to students in 1961 on land donated by local rancher Richard Pederson. Orville Dahl served as the first president, guiding the college through its early development and accreditation in 1962. During the 1960s and 1970s, enrollment grew and new academic and campus facilities were added. In 1986, California Lutheran College officially changed its name to California Lutheran University to reflect expanded graduate and professional programs. The university later introduced doctoral degrees and broadened its regional presence with additional program sites. Today, California Lutheran University continues to operate as a private institution rooted in its Lutheran heritage while serving a diverse student population.
