History

California Baptist University was founded in 1950 in El Monte, California, as California Baptist College by the Los Angeles Southern Baptist Association. Under the leadership of its first president, P. Boyd Smith, the college opened with a small group of students and a mission centered on Christian higher education. In 1954, the institution received its state charter, and in 1955 it relocated to Riverside, California, to accommodate growth. During the following decades, California Baptist College expanded its academic programs and campus facilities while maintaining its affiliation with the California Southern Baptist Convention. In 1998, reflecting its broader academic offerings and graduate programs, the institution officially became California Baptist University. In the 21st century, California Baptist University has continued to expand in enrollment, academic disciplines, and NCAA Division I athletics, shaping its role as a comprehensive private university in Southern California.
