Buena Vista University was founded in 1891 in Storm Lake, Iowa, by the Presbyterian Church (USA) as Buena Vista College. The institution began offering classes in temporary facilities before opening Old Main in 1892, which served as the primary academic building until it was destroyed by fire in 1956. During the mid-twentieth century, Buena Vista University expanded its campus with new residence halls, academic buildings, and a library to support growing enrollment. The college achieved accreditation in 1952 and introduced graduate programs in the 1990s. In 1995, Buena Vista College officially became Buena Vista University, reflecting its broader academic offerings. The university later developed online programs and additional locations across Iowa to serve nontraditional and graduate students. Today, Buena Vista University continues to operate from its Storm Lake campus while maintaining statewide and online educational initiatives.
