History

Bucknell University was founded in 1846 in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, originally as the University at Lewisburg. Established by a group of Baptists seeking to create a comprehensive institution in central Pennsylvania, the university held its first classes in the basement of a local church. In 1851, Howard Malcom was installed as the first president. During the nineteenth century, the institution expanded its curriculum and facilities, and in 1886 the Board of Trustees officially changed its name to Bucknell University in honor of benefactor William Bucknell. The university grew steadily through the twentieth century, adding engineering and management programs and strengthening its liberal arts foundation. Today, Bucknell University consists of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Freeman College of Management, and the College of Engineering, reflecting its evolution from a small Baptist-founded school into a nationally recognized liberal arts institution.
