Bryant University

Bryant University is a private university located in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Founded in 1863, it began as a business school and has evolved into a comprehensive institution offering undergraduate and graduate programs through its College of Business, College of Arts and Sciences, and School of Health and Behavioral Sciences. Bryant is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education and is known for integrating business education with liberal arts and professional studies. Bryant University was founded in 1863 in Providence, Rhode Island, by Henry Bryant and John Stratton as Bryant and Stratton College, a business-focused institution created to prepare students for careers in the growing American economy. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Bryant expanded its commercial curriculum under leaders such as Theodore Barrows Stowell. In 1935, the institution became Bryant College, reflecting its broader academic scope. For more than a century, the college operated in Providence before relocating in 1971 to a new campus in Smithfield, Rhode Island, on land donated by alumnus and entrepreneur Earl Tupper. In 2004, Bryant College officially became Bryant University, marking its transition to a university structure with expanded programs in arts and sciences and business. Today, Bryant University continues to develop new academic initiatives while maintaining its historic emphasis on professional education.
