History

Bridgewater State University was founded in 1840 as Bridgewater Normal School under the leadership of education reformer Horace Mann. Established in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, it was created to train teachers and became the first permanently located public institution of higher education in the state. Nicholas Tillinghast served as the first principal, guiding the school through its early years as it expanded facilities and formalized teacher preparation programs. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Bridgewater State University broadened its curriculum beyond teacher training and evolved into a state teachers college. It later became Bridgewater State College as academic offerings expanded into the liberal arts and sciences. In July 2010, the institution officially achieved university status and adopted the name Bridgewater State University. Today, Bridgewater State University continues to develop its academic programs while maintaining its historic mission in public education.
