Bridgewater State University

Bridgewater State University is a public university located in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. Founded in 1840, it is one of the oldest public institutions of higher education in the state and was originally established as a normal school to train teachers. Today, Bridgewater State University offers undergraduate and graduate programs across the arts and sciences, education, business, and other professional fields. The university serves a diverse student body, including many first-generation and commuter students from southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod. Known for its historical roots in teacher education and its role within the Massachusetts state university system, Bridgewater State University combines a traditional residential campus with regional access and community engagement.

Bridgewater State University was founded in 1840 as Bridgewater Normal School under the leadership of education reformer Horace Mann. Established in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, it was created to train teachers and became the first permanently located public institution of higher education in the state. Nicholas Tillinghast served as the first principal, guiding the school through its early years as it expanded facilities and formalized teacher preparation programs. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Bridgewater State University broadened its curriculum beyond teacher training and evolved into a state teachers college. It later became Bridgewater State College as academic offerings expanded into the liberal arts and sciences. In July 2010, the institution officially achieved university status and adopted the name Bridgewater State University. Today, Bridgewater State University continues to develop its academic programs while maintaining its historic mission in public education.
