History

Auburn University at Montgomery was founded in 1967 after the Alabama Legislature passed Act 403 creating a new branch of Auburn University in the state capital. The institution was established to expand access to higher education in Montgomery, Alabama, and to serve working adults and traditional students in the region. In 1968, H. Hanly Funderburk Jr. was appointed as the first chief administrator, and Auburn University at Montgomery opened classes in September 1969 at a temporary site before relocating to a 500-acre campus in east Montgomery. During the 1970s, the university expanded its academic programs and facilities, and in 1978 it became accredited as a separately administered institution. Over the following decades, Auburn University at Montgomery added graduate and professional programs, including doctoral offerings, and continued to grow as a comprehensive public university within the Auburn University system.
