Allegheny College

Allegheny College is a private liberal arts college located in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Established in 1815, it is one of the oldest colleges in the United States and the oldest in continuous existence under the same name west of the Allegheny Mountains. The college offers a broad range of undergraduate programs in the arts and sciences and is known for its interdisciplinary requirement that students complete both a major and a minor in different academic areas. Allegheny College is affiliated with the United Methodist Church but operates as a nonsectarian institution. Allegheny College was founded in April 1815 in Meadville, Pennsylvania, by the Reverend Timothy Alden, who also served as its first president. Classes began in 1816 with four students, and early development included construction of a library building designed by Alden. The college survived financial challenges in the nineteenth century and became affiliated with the United Methodist Church in 1833. Over time, Allegheny College expanded its academic offerings and campus facilities while maintaining a focus on the liberal arts. In the twentieth century, it strengthened its national profile through curricular innovation, including its distinctive requirement that students complete a major and a minor in different disciplines. Today, Allegheny College continues to operate as a residential liberal arts institution serving undergraduate students.
