The institution underwent several name changes, becoming Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1948 and officially adopting the name Alabama A & M University in 1969. Located in Normal, Alabama, the university expanded its academic offerings throughout the twentieth century, achieved accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and developed graduate and doctoral programs.
